OUR MISSION
The VRUSC is a collaborative non-profit pre-competitive consortium with a mission to make roads safer for all shared road users worldwide, with a focus on users of micromobility (bicycles, scooters), pedestrians, road, emergency, and safety workers, and all other shared road users.
We facilitate the introduction of best practices and standards to improve vehicle detection of VRUs with the goal of reducing crashes between vehicles and valuable road users.
OUR MEMBERS
It’s simple: Saving lives. By establishing a collaborative, neutral, pre-competitive space, we can identify and prioritize challenges in order to elevate potential solutions that work for all vulnerable road users.
OUR PROCESS
At the center of our process is an engineering philosophy:
-
Identify critical scenarios for vulnerable road users
-
Determine approaches to reduce risks
-
Evaluate potential solutions to improve safety.
OUR OUTPUTS
We're synthesizing some of the most innovative approaches to road safety engineering, policy, and infrastructure, and sharing them across the mobility spectrum.

WHAT WE DO
Functioning as a neutral global forum, the VRUSC convenes stakeholders across multiple global industry sectors, including vehicle and micromobility manufacturers, government, and tech with one goal: making the road safer for all shared road users.
The VRUSC welcomes organizations with an interest to collaborate to reduce the number of incidences, injuries, and fatalities among VRUs. Members may manufacture, develop, or operate transportation modalities including bicycles, ebikes, scooters, or vehicles, or related accessories, and interest to contribute to the work of the Consortium. To learn more, please visit the links below or complete the Contact Us form.
MOBILITY IS CHANGING
ROAD TRAFFIC INJURIES COST +3% OF A NATION’S GDP
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that road traffic injuries often cost 3% or more of a nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) arising from the cost of treatment, lost productivity for those killed or disabled by their injuries, and for family members who need to take time off work or school to care for the injured.
BICYCLISTS INJURIES AND DEATHS IN THE U.S. EXCEED $23B ANNUALLY
In the U.S., nearly 1,000 bicyclists die and 130,000+ are injured in crashes each year, with costs exceeding of injuries and deaths exceeding $23 billion annually including cost of health care, diminished work productivity, reduced quality of life, and the value of lives lost.
(CDC, Bicycle Safety Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2022)
8.1% INCREASE IN DEATHS FROM 2019
An estimated 7,484 pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists were killed in 2021, an 8.1% increase from 2019.
10-30% INJURIES IN THE EU WERE RELATED TO DISTRACTED DRIVING
In 2019, an estimated 5% or 800+ deaths and 10-30% of injuries were related to distracted driving in the European Union.
3.9% INCREASE IN PEDESTRIAN FATALITIES OVER 2019
In 2020, there were over 54,000 pedestrian injuries and over 6,500 pedestrian deaths in the U.S., a 3.9% increase in fatalities over 2019.
2020-2022 DISTRACTED DRIVING IN THE U.S. INCREASED BY OVER 20%
From 2020 to 2022, distracted driving increased by over 20% in the United States.

OUR WHY
Our roads today are shared by more types of mobility than ever before. People are discovering more ways to commute, explore, and enjoy their communities.
The continued growth in the use of bicycles of all types (pedal, ebike, cargo, and mountain) and electric scooters means less congestion and a healthier environment. Unfortunately, traffic fatalities among vulnerable road users have grown as adoption rises.
Our members understand that we all have a role to play — mobility, technology, infrastructure, and beyond. Each offers deep experience in safety engineering. Today, we’re working together collaboratively to enable safer mobility for the most vulnerable road users.
We’re putting people at the center of mobility.
